CALL FOR ARTISTS OF THE LATINX DIASPORA
Submission Deadline: January 5, 2020
Geografía Latinx Contemporary Dance Festival
February 7th-8th, 2020
Jump-Start Performance Company Theater, 710 Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, Texas, 78201
Established and emerging Latinx identifying dance artists are invited to submit performance proposals for the second Geografía Latinx Contemporary Dance Festival taking place in San Antonio, Texas at Jump-Start Theater!
Geografía creates a platform for choreographers of the Latinx diaspora to share their work, and celebrate their diverse perspectives and stories in a welcoming environment. By drawing Latinx choreographers together, Geografía strives to connect and strengthen our communities while fostering opportunities for cultural exchange through dance! The singularity of the US government's "Latina/o/@/x" signifier is foregrounded in the curation process to act as a subtext to the content the artists investigate in their works. This allows for the intersectionality of the artists to exist on a Western concert stage that historically has presented these artists as “Others." Indigenous identifying artists are encouraged to apply, as Geografía endeavors to celebrate the indigenous roots of Latinx culture to counter their historic erasure.
There will be a gathering before the festival for artists to connect and discuss their journeys as Latinx artists. The festival will run for two evenings followed by an audience/artist dialogue. Artists will tech before the show. Artists will earn a percentage of ticket sales as compensation. San Antonio artists will be prioritized in the selection process.
